The International Youth Organization (IYO) is one of the leading multi- service community-based, non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged youth and their families in the Greater Newark Area of New Jersey since 1970. IYO is one of Essex County’s largest private service providers for youth and young adults, ages 16 to 25, who are out of school, out of work and without a high school diploma.
IYO’s mission is to empower disenfranchised youth and their
families to take responsibility for themselves and their community
through programs and services that promote positive social and
civic values; to create opportunities for self-improvement through academic instruction, employability training, community service,
and to implement intervention strategies to foster family stabilization and neighborhood preservation.
James Wallace, IYO's founder, employed the premise that "energies exerted by the youth could be channeled constructively through non-traditional recreation, vocational, cultural and academic activities, all of which should emphasize self-discipline, obedience and fair play."
IYO’s success is built on the talent, dedication, and contributions of the people in our communities and, while many have retired or moved on to careers, we still want to stay in touch with the people who played a role in making IYO what it is today.
